Over the past few years, it seems that young people’s interest in politics and politicians has increased, both on social media and in our immediate surroundings. Is that really the case? On the surface, yes. Or rather, there is an increase in interest, but this does not necessarily translate into active participation.

Some young people follow the agenda and the news, recognize politicians, and express their reactions on social media when they feel the need. The most tangible expression of this interest is going to the polls and voting. I remember the excitement of young people who were going to vote for the first time in recent elections. At the same time, there are also young people who do not want to exercise their right to vote; according to one study, the two main reasons are the perception that their vote will not change anything and a lack of trust in any political formation.

While the situation looks like this in the background, the rate of active participation is lower. Young people are hesitant about party membership, taking an active role in campaigns, or serving in local administrations. Many of them believe that they do not have sufficient knowledge or financial means and that they cannot create change on their own. One of the reasons young people do not see themselves as capable may be the low level of political literacy.

What can be done to encourage young people to engage with politics and to take part in governance and policy-making processes? In order for them to feel strong and gain confidence in this field, practical courses should be added alongside theory in schools. Presidents and representatives are elected; these elections should not remain merely symbolic. The responsibility of politicians, on the other hand, should be to build trust and to convince young people of their power of representation. Youth councils in municipalities should be increased and made more active, and young people should be given more opportunities to reach politicians and make their voices heard. Even a few changes can make a difference.

The participation of young people in politics is an issue that should not be overlooked; developments in this area should be supported because they are the will of the future. They will make decisions, and they will live according to the decisions that are made.
